One of the most hyped anime for this coming fall season would be the fourth season of Boku no Hero Academia. Just like other people, I’m also very excited about it.
But before we welcome the latest offering of the franchise, I watched the first-ever movie of the series, Boku no Hero Academia – Futari no Hero.
Deku and All Might receive an invitation to I-Expo, the world’s leading exhibition of Quirk abilities and hero item innovations! Amid the excitement, sponsors, and pros from all over, Deku meets Melissa, a girl who is Quirkless just like he once was. Suddenly, I-Expo’s top-of-the-line security system gets hacked by villains, and a sinister plan is set in motion. It’s a serious threat to hero society, and one man holds the key to it all—the symbol of peace, All Might. (MAL)
Before anything else, I want to put this out there. I don’t call myself a fan of Boku no Hero Academia. Yes, I admit…this series is good. Really good, but not amazing for me. It’s indeed a good series to share and talk about with your friends, but its not my favorite.
Because of that stance, I didn’t have much expectations for this movie. All I know that the events of this movie happened before the 3rd season and is canon, compared to the usual trope of shounen movies.
Now that put my initial thoughts of the series out there, I can now easily dive in to the movie.
The movie was okay.
That’s all, thanks for reading.
Like I could even end my review just like that.
But indeed, the was amazingly okay. It didn’t wow me or anything…it’s quite clear that its a Boku no Hero Movie. From its animation to the story, nothing really stand out. But don’t take this the negative way as the quality of the series had always been above average. Let’s just say that Studio Bones did a really good job in releasing high quality output consistently.
However, I kinda wish there was something new or unique thing this movie could have offered, other than showing as All Might’s real face, and some new characters.
Anyway, let’s proceed.
The story feels like your typical shounen action movie. It’s pretty much what you would’ve expect it to be, as stated in the synopsis. It follows Deku ad All Might visiting a new place and met new characters. It just so happen that some of the students from class-A was also in attendance (how convenient), so in some ways, everyone was complete.
The first half of the movie didn’t wow me at all. It was more of an info dumping and some fanservice to the fans of the franchise. The 2nd half though, had more flavor and excitement. Even though most of the situation of the characters were very predictable, the action pack sequences saves it. Because of this, the movie had an inconsistent pacing.
Still, the overall story was solid. Even though the first half was meh, I kinda understand its importance in giving us information about stuff. But having an awesome 2nd half, kinda highlights how boring the first was, and at the same time, made me enjoyed the movie more.
Now for the characters who conveniently appeared in the movie, not much development from them. The highlight was more on the new characters as we don’t know much about them yet and they are very mysterious. Infairness, for a short span of time, they actually got quite a lot of development.
As always, the villains felt shallow all throughout the movie. They pretty much do their role as the villain well.
The character designs remains solid as ever and very consistent. I especially love the designs of th new characters. The designs represents their personality really well. For the animation, bruh, hands down, the action sequences were a delight to watch. If you are a fan of the series’ animation, then you would definitely like the movie action scenes.
However, its not perfect. If you have been noticing, I keep on saying how consistent everything was. As much as I love Boku no Hero Academia’s animation, it would have been better if they added something unique flavor, I would have been more amazed.
Overall, this movie is still amazing at is. If you are a huge fan of the franchise, then you’ll definitely enjoy this alot more.
